09/01/06 Workshops for Horizons program

Washington Ag September 1, 2006 Washington State University Extension's Horizons program has received a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation to help as many as 25 small rural Washington communities address the issue of poverty. Project director Doreen Hauser-Lindstrom says to be able to get started in the program a community needs to have at least five people attend a one-day workshop. Hauser-Lindstrom: "To learn about what Horizons is, what the program is. Learn a little bit about poverty and an introduction to the holistic view of poverty and leadership and community development." There will be five different one-day workshops in Washington plus two that are being held in conjunction with Idaho in the panhandle. They include September 30th in Moscow, Idaho, October 3rd at Worley at the casino, in Colville October 9th, Moses Lake October 11th and Goldendale October 17th. The workshops are free and a meal is provided. Hauser-Lindstrom says they hope to have selected the communities to participate by the end of November and get the program up and running in January. A pilot program was conducted in by Okanogan County Extension this past year.
