Ag Resources in the Midst of Helene
Today we are taking a moment to do a quick Hurricane Helene update in your agricultural news as headlines are flashing all over. From the ag perspective, here are some tidbits that I’ve picked up across the region:• In Florida, The Commissioner of Agriculture, Wilton Simpson, has approved an Emergency Order temporarily suspending the intrastate movement requirements for the transportation of animals. In addition, the following states have waived their interstate import requirements for Florida pets, horses and livestock leaving the state: Alabama, Georgia (does not include livestock), Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
• The USDA is reminding producers that they have programs that provide assistance in the wake of disasters. They have partnered with FEMA and others to create the Disaster Resource Center. This central source of information utilizes a searchable knowledge base powered by agents with subject matter expertise
• The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries has provided temporary shelter facilities for farmers who need to evacuate their livestock.
• And, in Georgia, the Department of Agriculture has information on resources and recovery efforts available on their website.
