Georgia Makes Push for Rural Veterinarians
With your Southeast Regional Ag news, I am Haylie Shipp. This is the Ag Information Network. The need for rural veterinarians continues to be an issue across the United States including here in the Southeast. As an answer back, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper has now announced that the Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program (GVELRP) is accepting applications for the 2025 cycle. Eligible veterinarians can apply from August 1 through September 30, 2024. The State Veterinary Education Board will review applications and announce award recipients later this year.
From Commissioner Harper, “This program ensures that our rural communities, including farmers, ranchers, and pet owners, have access to essential veterinary services. I’m thankful for the General Assembly's support and look forward to seeing talented veterinarians serve in these critical areas.”
The program offers financial relief to veterinarians who commit to providing services for at least 20 hours per week, over a minimum of one year, in designated rural counties.
Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful residents, live in Georgia, and be practicing veterinarians or veterinary students in their final year of study. This year, awards of up to $20,000 per twelve-month service period are available, with a maximum of $80,000 per participant.
