Part 1: DeLaval Releases VMS Batch Milking Technology

A global industry leader in dairy farming solutions recently opened its new technical training center in Ontario, Canada. VMS Solutions Manager, Jason French talks more about the company, based in Sweden.

“(The) company last year celebrated its 100 and 40th anniversary so as 1883 Gustaf DeLaval invented the cream separator and the cream separator was a huge innovation at that point in time and Gustaf de Laval was an inventor, invented many different kinds of machines for milking automated milking.”

Over his years, the company obtained its initial VMS batch milking system robot patent in 1983. And during that decade, there were doubts about the need for automated milking due to the traditional reliance on manual labor on farms. Nevertheless, French says DeLaval foresaw the transition to modern farming practices.

“The robot itself was really initially to help the family farms stay sustainable, being able to do all the other duties on the farm takes a lot of time. And so if we can reduce, you know, the amount of time that the farmer actually has to be milking cows and they can spend that time, you know, managing the farm, but also that time to it was a real lifestyle change as well.”
