USDA Trade & Specialty Crops Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with today’s Fruit Grower Report. Trade is a topic many in agriculture are talking a lot about during this winter trade show
season.
I had a chance to catch up with USDA Under Secretary for Trade and Agricultural Affairs Alexis Taylor, and asked her about our recently improved relations with India …
TAYLOR … “Yeah, we’re really excited about the nine tariff reductions we’ve been able to secure with India in the past year.”
And one of those, Taylor says is for apples …
TAYLOR … “Prior to those tariffs being put on, India was our number one apple export market. And so, we are very excited to try and get back into that market to support our apple industry in that market to recapture some of that market share. I think it was a critical market and it can be a really important and critical market again going forward.”
So now, Taylor says we’ve got to get our apples back into India …
TAYLOR … “We do and we’re excited to support the industry in doing that. One of the things that we are just announcing is India is on our list of trade missions for 2024.”
With a little help, Taylor says from the experts …
TAYLOR … “We are hopeful that we will be able to bring some of our apple industry with us to again start really capitalizing on that lower tariff and getting back in that market and bringing our products again to showcase what quality, what safety we have because we know Indian consumers want it.”
