In this day and age of agricultural technology, you might think that most irrigation systems are automated. Not the case, says FarmHQ founder and CEO David Wallace. He was working for Amazon when his farmer dad asked him for help.

Wallace… “My dad said, Hey, we have this problem with our irrigation systems. They fail all the time and they damage our crops like crazy. As a result, we're spending a lot of time just driving around, checking on the equipment and making sure that it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. What I found is that for the type of irrigation that we use on the farm, hard hose reel irrigation, there really aren't any reliable monitoring and control systems available.”

So he built one and formed a business around it. Now a few short years later there are farmers in over 30 states using the technology.

Wallace… “A lot of our farmers before installing our system, had literally no idea how much water they're using, and definitely not by individual tract of land. So now they can see a very accurate account of how much water was applied to a field and at what time. And then they can go back and correlate that with their yields. Maybe they missed locations. Maybe they over applied in certain locations. So the record keeping and analytics features of FarmHQ are really a huge advantage for growers and a big step up over what they have currently.”
