Pears Are Healthy Pt 2
With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Finding the best way to reach your consumer has not been easy the past couple of years given the supply chain challenges everyone is facing.Kevin Moffitt, president of Pear Bureau Northwest, says their target market seems to have gotten younger in recent years …
MOFFITT … “I think people think pears used to be more of a fruit that was being consumed by the older generations, and maybe those older generations are going away and the Boomers are, you know, the disposable income maybe isn’t there as much as it was when they were working and things like that.”
So, Moffitt says the Millennials and Gen-Xers are exactly what the doctor ordered …
MOFFITT … “It’s nice to see we have a young audience that are buying the pears, so we have to ensure that we’re reaching them in the ways that they consumer media, and that’s online.”
To that end, Moffitt says their doing a lot of consumer research right now …
MOFFITT … “What we’re doing is showing consumers different pears of different shapes and then we’re having them taste them so some firmer pears, some Asian-variety pears, plus some Bartlett type that are softer and juicier, and just trying to find out what they like about those different varieties to ensure that when we get a new variety propagated, we will be hitting those buttons that the consumers are after when they’re buying that piece of fruit to bring them back for more, right?”
And as that research continues, Moffitt says they will try and find exactly what it is those consumers want and do their best to bring it to them every year.
