Aronia Berries New Superfood Rich in Antioxidants
Blake Johnson is the CEO of American Aronia Accelerator in Fargo, North Dakota and says Aronia berries meet this heightened demand for superfoods by providing more antioxidants and greater sustainability than others.
"Aronia is the next super fruit that I think the market's been waiting for,” said Johnson. “The reason it's so good is it has 3 to 4 times the amount of antioxidants in others. Its higher in antioxidants than blueberries. It's higher and antioxidants than cranberries. It's higher than antioxidants than elderberry. It’s a great native plant to the U.S. and it's gaining popularity because of the health benefits.
He explains what his company American Aronia Accelerator is.
“Right now, we're focusing on the B2B market,” said Johnson. “We're taking Aronia barriers and selling them to different companies so they can manufacture consumer goods. We're focused on producing single strength juices and powders for the pharmaceutical industry. They’re taking these fruit powders or juice powders and putting them into ammonia gummies for a dietary supplement, or they're taking a single strength juice and throwing them into different two-ounce drinks.”
Aronia berries are primarily grown in the Midwest from the Dakotas to the Appalachian Mountains.
