Wine Away Pt 1

With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. It’s no secret, Washington state makes great wines, but fortunately, it’s also the home of Wine Away, the number one red wine stain remover on the market.

Founder Staci Wanichek says it began 25 years ago after friends reported the all-purpose cleaner-degreaser she’d given them to clean up after a party worked “pretty good” but wasn’t perfect … so she went back to the lab to work up a better option …

WANICHEK … “So, we gave it back out to all the same people that said it worked “pretty well” on the red wine stains, and on pet accident stains, and they loved it. And so then, I said, well, what the heck am I supposed to do with this product?”

Wanichek says she called Food & Wine Magazine to see if there was a market for such a product and they said, send us a sample …

WANICHEK … “I found a white, triangular bottle and I wrote my name on it in Sharpy with my phone number. And, about a week and a half later, he called me and said, hey we tried your product and we loved it. We tested it on white linens and upholstery and clothing in our test kitchen and we love it and we want to do a write up about it.”

The next step, Wanichek says …

WANICHEK … “We hired an ad agency to design us a logo and label, which is the existing label that we have now, and sent it up to him, and then they wrote about us in May and that was our very first write up, the one that started it all.”
