Pears Are Healthy Pt 2
With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Pears are delicious and they’re also good for you with everything from vitamin C to fiber. And that’s how pears are marketed as more consumers look to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle. But Pear Bureau Northwest president Kevin Moffitt says it’s got to be both …
MOFFITT … “Pears are healthy. They’re tasty and healthy and it’s a big balance between trying to sell pears as a medicine versus trying to sell pears as a very tasty way to eat healthy.”
And with the Boomers aging, the following generations are a pretty healthy bunch…
MOFFITT … “They seem to be more and more. I agree with you 100% and also making those choices for their kids. The Millennial and Gen-Z, or Gen-X households have some Gen-Z’s in them, but the Gen-Z’s, I mean, they’re already up to 24 years old so these generations move quickly.”
And pears are great, Moffitt says, now that they’ve got younger mouths to feed …
MOFFITT … “So, they’re out actually buying, for the children as well, a little bit better to make it’s something healthy and, as the speaker also went into the other day, people are looking at ingredients and they don’t want to buy something that has ingredients they can’t even pronounce or if it has six ingredients and after four, they’re like, oh come on!”
But, Moffitt says this is really nothing new …
MOFFITT … “Produce in general, I mean, people have been saying for years, it’s like your mother was right, eat your fruits and vegetables, it’s a healthy thing.”
Moffitt says their promotions are working well and he’s looking forward to having another good year for pears.
