It’s time for your Farm of the Future Report. I’m Tim Hammerich.

Farmers have access to agronomic advisors to call on when they want extra advice or support, but what about something as important as water? There is nothing more critical to growing a crop, and in areas like the western U.S., it’s becoming increasingly more scarce.

Silvera… “Right now in agriculture, we just don't have enough of it.”

That’s John Silvera, an independent crop consultant who is considering adding irrigation advisory to his list of services to growers.

Silvera… “So one thing I've been thinking of adding is water management services. So basically the same thing as writing up a recommendation for pest or fertilizer, but writing up a schedule for when a guy should irrigate, how much he should irrigate. I think that's a big opportunity and there's a lot of tech involved in that to tell you evapotranspiration rates, temperature, wind, and that all factors into how much water should be applied to keep the crops at an optimal level. Since I'm already going through the field, why not do both? Because water is a valuable commodity and it has to be used correctly.”

Overcoming water challenges will take a collaborative effort for the future of farming.
