Increase Almond Yields With Nematode Control

If you can protect your almond trees from those damaging nematodes, yields go way up. Manuel Jimenez is a customer service advisor with Bayer CropScience. His territory is Fresno and Tulare Counties.

“Our field scientists have conducted a number of trials over a three-year period of time. In fact, they did 13 trials and showed on average, a 20% increase in yield,’ noted Jimenez.

“And that was with a Velum One and Movento integrated program managing nematodes in that study, there was a non-treated area where the nematodes were allowed to feed on the roots,” he explained.

Jimenez said using Velum One and Movento is not a replacement to soil fumigation, if the grower can fumigate.

“So, one of the questions we get often is can we use Velum and Movento as a replacement for pre-plant fumigation? The short answer is no. David Doll, a former UC ANR Farm Advisor Merced County, did a study where he looked at the two and compared them in a young planting, and fumigation was the best performing treatment in the study. The second best was a Velum and Movento and program,” said Jimenez

“So, although it's not the best for when you compare it to fumigation. As we mentioned before, not everyone is choosing to fumigate when they replant a new almond block, so Velum and Movento become the best option for a non-fumigated block,” Jimenez said.
