Nematodes are a serious pest and young almonds, and the industry must protect those trees. Manual Jimenez is a customer business advisor with Bayer Crop Protection. His territory is Fresno and Tulare counties.

“Actually, we have two products that are managing nematodes for many years now we've been selling Movento as a foliar spray, and it is a two-way systemic material. It goes down the phloem into the roots and impacts nematodes,” said Jimenez. “And now with the new Velum One product, a contact nematicide. It’s applied through the irrigation system (both drip and micro-sprinklers), and it goes directly into the soil where the nematodes exist.

And Jimenez said, there are many things growers can do to combat nematode issues.

“One is a pre-plant fumigation. That's not something that we sell, but that is a great option for going into a new block or particularly one that's coming out of say grapevines or almonds back into almonds. Generally, pre-plant fumigation is one of the best things you can do.

Jimenez said there are problems for many growers regarding fumigation.

“The reality is that many growers these days, for whatever reason. are not fumigating, but have to go in and plant new blocks without fumigation,” he said. And that's where Velum One and Movento come in, and it’s really the best option you've got where you have not fumigated and you have nematode issues,” Jimenez said.
