It’s February and that means American Heart Month, and the California Walnut Board is rolling out its fourth consecutive campaign on heart health in a record 10,000 retail stores across the U.S.

Jennifer Olmstead is Marketing Director for Domestic Public Relations for the California Walnut Board and Commission.

“American Heart Month for walnuts is really a perfect time to focus on walnuts because not only do they have the qualified health claim as a heart-healthy food, but they also have the American heart association, heart checkmark,” said Olmstead. “And partnering with retailers for American Heart Month gives retailers a nice cause to stand behind.”

But it also helps retailers promote walnuts outside of that November, December timeframe.

“And a program such as American Heart month gets them thinking about promoting walnuts at other times of the year. So, we're really excited. We've got a couple of retailers who are coming back for the fourth year. So, this is our second year and running the program nationally, but our fourth year running this program at retail,” explained Olmstead.

“And we are starting to see retailers marking this event in their calendar and thinking about walnuts during February, and that's very exciting news,” she said. “And then we also are supporting it through all of our public relations efforts. We've had some great research coming out on heart health and walnuts, and it all just really comes together to support this particular month.”
