With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Pear displays at your favorite produce section could soon be taking on a fresh, new look.

Pear Bureau Northwest is launching a contest called the “Aisle of Red Pears” display challenge, open to retailers everywhere …

STEPHENSON … “A lot of stores are different sizes so it’s very difficult for someone to fill a whole wall with pears in some smaller stores. So, this way everyone has an opportunity and the only requirement is that you build out a display of 12-square feet, which is significant. That’s a large space.”

The Pear Bureau’s Kathy Stephenson says it might take some creativity …

STEPHENSON … “It’s going to require being on an endcap or taking over some other shelf space in order to make that happen. So, in response to our having a few red pears still in stock, as a crop, as an industry, this is a great way for us to bring some interest and get those red pears displayed prominently so consumers can find them and enjoy them this time of year.”

Pears in general, Stephenson says are moving well, but the red Anjou’s could use some help …

STEPHENSON … “If we can continue to move those through and finish them up in April or May, that will ensure we’ll probably have the best price for growers on the red pear inventory.”

Every entry is a winner! Stephenson say just snap a picture of your display and upload it. Every entry gets a $25 gift card, and qualifies for a $500 gift card random drawing for every 500 entries.

Tune in tomorrow for more.
