With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. With applications for Round 2 of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program underway, and a number of key Northwest crops included, producers are making their case.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says outside of the money, there are other needs to consider for these providers …

NEWHOUSE … “Well, I think there’s certainly a couple of things right now. One of the things is, a lot of resources have been utilized, spent, money’s been spent for providing a safe workplace for our farmworkers. And so, just like every other business in the country I think farmers should be eligible for some help there.”

Newhouse says when it comes to the essential work of agriculture, there are many areas they’ve been working on and many unknowns out there …

NEWHOUSE … “We’ve been able to fix some of the things, the details, with the CFAP program, but also there’s still some, I guess you could say, money on the table available, that should be available for continuation of the paycheck protection program. I hope we will have that available to people again because, as I’ve said before, this pandemic is lasting longer than we anticipated when we passed the CARES Act, so providing continuing resources to those that are still struggling, those businesses, employers and employees that need help, I think is important.”

Listen tomorrow for more on the areas where ag producers could use some help and what’s being done to make it happen.
