Cosmic Crisp Year 2 Pt 2
With today Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. After last year’s very successful debut of the much-anticipated Cosmic Crisp apple, apple lovers are eager for this second season’s crop.Toni Lynn Adams, with the Washington Apple Commission, says the apples will hit the stores in December after a post-harvest storage period …
ADAMS … “As the starch in Cosmic Crisp turns to sugar it really improves its flavor profile, but with the increased volume you can expect a longer availability. It did sell out very quickly with popular demand for Cosmic Crisp. So, you can expect there to be availability longer into the season.”
Adams says availability should be noticeably different than last year …
ADAMS … “There was some limited availability and it was a pretty small quantity, when you really think about it, for the 2019 season. You know, Washington produced, we had a crop volume of 134-million boxes. So, that 250,000 boxes, it’s actually a relatively small volume number, but we’re definitely going to see that increased volume moving forward into the upcoming season.”
This year’s numbers, Adams says are impressive …
ADAMS … “So, we’re just looking to be just under 2-million. So, that’s the forecast that’s available and the Proprietary Variety Management, PVM, that is handling the Cosmic Crisp, they’ll have update numbers here shortly, I believe.”
And, Adams says you can expect even more Cosmic Crisp in the coming years.
Tune in tomorrow for more.
