I’m Bob Larson. As many American farmers and ranchers struggle with the pandemic and its many obstacles, some Northwest growers are still trying to figure out how or if they fit in to the USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says it’s something producers and the government are still working on …

NEWHOUSE … “There’s a comment period that the USDA is taking into consideration for people making those cases for different crops and if they were left out of their first guidance and rule-making.”

That, Newhouse says means there’s still time …

NEWHOUSE … “So, each of the individual commodities will have to make the case that they were left out as to why they should be included.”

As to whether or not Congress will step up if more aid is needed, Newhouse says …

NEWHOUSE … “I absolutely believe that there is a strong interest on the part of members of Congress to be as supportive as possible for our nation’s agriculture. It’s truly been shown that our food supply is an issue of national security.”

But in the end, Newhouse believes Congress will do what’s necessary …

NEWHOUSE … “I do think that anticipated shortfalls in the aid program will be met by Congress. So, like I said, I can’t promise that. We still have yet to have that debate.”

Newhouse says the money they’ve been able to appropriate so far is probably a far cry from the total losses anticipated to be incurred in the agricultural industry.
