Trade Deal Struck with Japan

I’m Bob Larson. The trade deal with Japan, announced last week, is seen by many as a great first step toward helping Washington farmers and ranchers.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says Japan is a huge export market for a variety of Washington producers and this deal brings with it reduced or no tariffs for many of them …

NEWHOUSE … “I think this is tremendous news on some real progress between the country of Japan and the United States. Japan has some, I think, 127-million population. It’s a huge for many of the products that we produce in the Northwest.”

A long-time advocate for Washington producers, Newhouse says the two leaders got together and put the wheels in motion …

NEWHOUSE … “President Trump and President Abe have signed some initial agreement documents on the first phase of a very important agreement that will help many of the things that we produce. For instance, fresh beef and frozen beef, our wine industry, fresh cherries, frozen potatoes, wheat and wheat products, are all things that Japan has been a very important market for and this is truly good news for our producers in Washington state.”

Newhouse says there’s still some things to do, and more products we produce like fresh potatoes, but this is great progress and he’s delighted we’re able to count this deal as a win so far.
