Shutdown Timing

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. As the government shutdown continues, its impact on rural America will continue to grow.

Depending on how soon it ends, American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall says this shutdown has the potential to impact next year’s crops for farmers across the country …

DUVALL … “This federal shutdown could not come at a worse time. Our farmers are facing a serious economic storm. Row crop prices are low, production expenses are at record highs, and markets have been severely limited by trade disputes.”

As if, Duvall says the higher cost of doing business and those trade disputes weren’t enough …

DUVALL … “The shutdown adds more uncertainty for farmers, barely holding on. Without local USDA offices fully open, farmers are left without critical resources, including loans and disaster payments, to help us weather this year and prepare for the next.”

Farmers have a very important job to do, and Duvall says we need to let them do it …

DUVALL … “Farmers want to feed people, and we are doing everything we can to hold on. We need Congress to do its job and reopen the government to ensure our farmers can stay in business for the health and security of our nation.”

Again, that is Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation.
