Washington Wheat Harvest Pt 3

I'm Bob Larson. Washington wheat farmers are reporting average to above average harvests this summer. But, with the cost of production outpacing the market prices, patience is wearing thin for farmers who'd like to see some resolution to the trade issues.

According to Washington Association of Wheat Growers Executive Director, Michelle Hennings, the time is now ...

HENNINGS ... "It's important that all these trade deals, starting with the USMCA, become finalized. Especially, the farmers, you know, out there in the countryside, right now with farmers everything's very uncertain and it's very concerning for everybody."

Hennings says the support seems to be there ...

HENNINGS ... "Yes, I did hear from a couple of Congressmen. They felt that if the bill actually hit the floor, they feel it would pass. We were just recently in D.C. in July talking to some others. They still are looking to get some of the issues addressed within the agreement."

She says it's not for lack of trying ...

HENNINGS ... "USTR, Robert Lighthizer is doing a fantastic job getting to the hill and working with both sides of the aisle, because I did hear a lot of good compliments about him, so to me that is a good sign."

And, Hennings says it's on both sides of the political aisle ...

HENNINGS ... "We also know that the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is working with a work group to try and address some of the issues they see and we're hoping, you know, as soon as possible, they bring this to the floor when they get back from recess."

And while the trade drama continues, comments from the President put wheat growers off. Listen tomorrow for details.
