Horse Herbs Alternative medications have found their way to the horse world. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll tell you a little about that in one minute. The last few years I've been noticing a lot more preventive mixtures and remedies showing up the livestock equipment catalogs especially for horses. Now, I've just read about Loryhl Davis of Salmon, Idaho owner of Herbs of the World Inc. who specializes in herbal treatments for horses. Loryhl started her business in South Florida working with racehorse owners and trainers. Her equine herbal mixtures can be designed for general health or as specifics as trying to reduce pulmonary bleeding brought on by exercise in some horses. Lorhyl uses over 200 herbs to produce her 83 different product blends. She believes it's a good idea t work with a veterinarian's direction and be sure to tell your vet if you are using herbs as part of your horse health plan. Assistant professor in neuroscience at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, David Schneider feels that "a certain number of veterinarians today consider a wider spectrum of medicine than what the FDA approves." Schneider states that FDA approved drugs have gone through many trials for safety and efficacy, but while that proof is lacking for herbal remedies there are some scientists researching some Chinese herbal treatments. I wonder if the old treatment using tobacco to worm a horse would be considered an old home remedy or an alternate medication. I'm Jeff Keane. Capital Press 12/2/05
