Farm Bill Revote Pt 2
I'm Bob Larson. A couple of major issues stand between GOP Representatives and passing the House version of the 2018 Farm Bill by June 22nd when a revote is scheduled. In order to flip the votes of 30 Republicans, agreements on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and what to do with DACA and the Dreamers is needed.
With the current Farm Bill due to expire in September, Representative Dan Newhouse says they've got a lot to do ...
NEWHOUSE ... "You're exactly right. We have until the end of September, I believe, before the current Farm Bill expires. So, the thing is, we will, you know you never can say for sure, but I'm fairly confident we will pass the Farm Bill out of the House this June and then it goes to the Senate. They have to get their bill through and then we'll go to conference. So, we still have a lot of work to do over the summer, before the September deadline."
But, Newhouse says GOP leaders remain confident ...
NEWHOUSE ... "I just talked to the Chairman this morning, Chairman Conaway on the House Ag Committee, he is confident that we will be able to get all this done. Like I said, most of the opposition was not because of policy within the Farm Bill. It had to do with another issue and so, if we can make progress on the immigration issue I believe that we'll have the support for the Farm Bill."
Newhouse says the Senate version is similar to the House Farm Bill and, from what he hears, they've got a pretty good chance of getting it done before the September deadline.
He says if not, the current Farm Bill will temporarily continue operation until the next Farm Bill is complete.
