Pears During Nutrition Month
Maintaining a nutritious and healthy lifestyle is the focus of many in the food business with February being American Heart Month and March National Nutrition Month.
Pear Bureau Northwest's Kathy Stephenson says they're using this time to remind consumers about how easy it is to eat healthier ...
STEPHENSON ... "One of the things that inspired us was when we read about a report from the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC, and it said that one in ten Americans do no get enough fruits and vegetables. And, that just really sparked for us that there's this opportunity for anyone in the fruit industry to really jump in and try to do more."
Stephenson says using a series of promotions to give people simple reminders ...
STEPHENSON ... "And, we're really just trying to create some engagement and some fun and not to forget to remind people that fruit is one of the most simple things you can do to add fiber into your diet and improve heart health."
But, Pear Bureau President Kevin Moffitt says pears aren't always the first thing people think of when shopping ...
MOFFITT ... "They are the overlooked product in the produce department and we always have to keep pears top-of-mind and keep people reminded that pears are wonderful. They love them when they try them, but they just don't think about them when they're going to the store so we have to get them in front of people when they're in the store."
He says pears are an excellent source of fiber and Vitamin C, as well as being sodium, fat, and cholesterol free.
