This is your Northwest report for Thursday, December 15, I'm David Sparks and on Tuesday, I ran a story in which Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said, in part, "On behalf of all of the families across rural America affected by the heroin and opioid epidemic, I am grateful that Congress has answered President Obama's call to provide much-needed funding to combat this crisis that is devastating our rural communities. The 21st Century Cures Act includes $1 billion over two years, including $500 million in 2017, to prevent opioid misuse and expand access to treatment for individuals with drug misuse disorders.” Well today we heard this from Oregon's Republican Congressman Greg Walden.

Elsewhere, The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration has announced updated regulations to protect the rights of farmers. The Farmer Fair Practices Rules target the most harmful practices hurting farmers and clearly outlines common sense protections to restore fairness and reduce the burden for farmers seeking justice under the Packers and Stockyards Act. This is the most recent action in the Obama's Administration's efforts to level the playing field for all Americans.
