With the Fruit Grower Report I ‘m Susan Allen, I caught up with Kathy Stephenson, Director of Marketing Communications for Pear Bureau Northwest to see how our NW Pear crop is shaping up

Stephenson:

Our 5 year average is about 20 million 44 lb cases and we are going to be below that at 18.9 so it’s a little less than our 5 year average. What contributed to that, as we were expected this year to be up a bit because our crop tends to be somewhat up and down, each year? It sIt’s one of those crops that tends to have a great year and then an off year. So we expected it to be up but what happened was we had a lot of heat in May when the blossom was there and we had a large drop of that early fruit right in that late May period. We were a little surprised by that What has happened after that is the crop is coming in beautiful, there is no thinning

So how does that affect the quality of the fruit?

Stephenson:
What has happened though is that the crop is coming in beautiful, there is no thinning required so the crop is on the tree and it’s gorgeous. We have beautiful clean fruit that is going to make it into the fresh market as opposed to any blemishes; we did not have any hail damage. Mother Nature has been terrific for our crop and a larger percentage of that crop is going to go into the fresh market.

Kathy said it won’t be until November when they will have a full count of exactly where the 2016 pear crop is at.
