Today we have Josh Mills with the Steelhead forecast and also some tips on how to hook into early season steelhead using a technique he calls skating a fly. Mills. "It's predicted to be somewhere in the same as last year. I think we were somewhere between 250,000 to 260,000 maybe 270,000 over Bonneville. It's anticipated to be somewhere between that and the 10 year average. There will be fish around, certain rivers like the Wenatchee and the Methow have to have openings for folks to get after it. The other tributaries should be doing pretty well. Early season one of the greatest things a fly fisherman can do is fish with a dry line. Dry line fishing tends to be fishing on that very tip top of the water column. My favorite is to get a fish to come up and attack a skated dry fly. Throwing it out just below 90 degrees and ripping it across the top of the water. There is nothing like seeing a 10-15 lbs fish not try to eat but kill the thing coming across the top of the water. As the water temperature lower fish will decent deeper into the water column and are less apt to attack a dry fly. Early season is fantastic, light line, light flies light leader.
