The ag community was thrilled that Senate passed the Roberts-Stabenow compromise last week that would create a national GMO labeling standard. Both House and Senate recess at the end of the week leaving little time left on the calendar this election year. Farm Bureau's Andrew Walmsley says the House needs to act by Friday.

Walmsley: The Senate did their job, they sent it to the House the House is in this week before they recess to address we are hoping to have it out of the House before the end of the week and expect the President to sign this

Walmsley says the bill is not perfect because it mandates GMO labeling, but adds the legislation is important because it avoids a costly patchwork of state GMO labeling laws...tape

Walmsley There's been several studies that point to the state by state labeling patchwork will increase consumers cost from anywhere from $500 to $1000 per year. This is unnecessary cost because these products are perfectly safe but we recognize that consumers want to have more information, and this legislation will provide that option.

He says Farm Bureau members need to contact their Representative to pressure lawmakers to pass the legislation this week.

Now is definitely the time to ask them to do something for you and we need the House to act this week because the calendar doesn't look too bright for getting much else done later this year so make sure you reach out and let your representative know to vote yes on S.764.

That's Farm Bureau congressional relations director Andrew Walmsley.
