I'm Susan Allen with Washington Ag Today, Having three boys that went through the Wenatchee and Cashmere public school systems, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff and the teachers so it was no surprise to learn that Wenatchee schools located in an area rich in agriculture farms would be rockstars of the farm to school movement using locally sourced food in all 14 school cafeterias. Kent Getzin Director of Food Services who is the visionary behind this explains how food and education are a perfect mix.

Getzin: "We are not only providing food we are providing an education about food. We are teaching kids life long habits which will hopefully help them make wise choices as adults.

Let's listen in a they on a recent visit to Sunnyslope grade school's harvest of the month day, where the students were introduced to purple potatoes."

Not only is the Wenatchee School District sourcing it's food from local farmers, like these two women, they just got the go-ahead to compost food waste from all cafeterias. They are partnering with Stemilt Growers who will do the composting and then use on their orchards,

When asked why the farm to school movement works so well in Wenatchee Clara Duff, Development Associate Washington Sustainable Food & Farming Network said she belives it's their "can do" attitude.

Duff: When you have the "can do" attitude that it's not that hard. They are doing wonderful things regarding their menu and the diversity being offered and going out of their way to connect really with farmers and bring that produce in and make it available to o students."
