New Faces, New Funding for Southern Agriculture

Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate announced five leaders have been selected to serve on the Alabama USDA Farm Service Agency state committee. Roy Shepherd “Shep” Morris Sr. of Shorter will serve as chair, bringing more than 50 years of experience producing cotton, corn, and sesame and currently serving as president of Milstead Farm Group Gin. Committee members include Wallace Drury of Greensboro, operator of a multi-generational farm producing catfish, cattle, and hay; Billy D. Hixon of Banks, a fourth-generation producer managing a 1,500-acre operation with beef cattle, poultry, and row crops; Michael D. Reeves of Hartselle, managing partner of a diversified fruit and vegetable operation with an on-farm retail market; and Mykel Rae Taylor of Auburn, who was raised on a cow-calf operation and brings expertise in farm management and applied agricultural economics.

In Florida, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson announced $6.3 million is available through Florida’s Future Forests Program and the Enhancing Gulf Waters Through Forested Watershed Restoration (RESTORE) Program. The cost-share programs support tree planting and timber stand improvements to enhance forest health, improve water quality, and ensure long-term forestland viability, with applications open through March 27, 2026.
