Colorado Corn Op-Ed on Food Labeling

In July the Vermont mandatory food labeling law will go into effect —- and will be implications across the country. Colorado Corn’s Executive Director Mark Sponsler has written an Opinion Editorial that has been printed in several Colorado Newspapers asking the U.S. Senate to follow the lead of the US House and pass a consistent national-labeling standard. Colorado Corn Communications Director Eric Brown shares some highlights from the op-ed
Brown: “Well we need to keep food labeling consistent state to state much as food crosses state line — we’re not growing oranges in Colorado — so folks who want those they have to come from other states. So as much as food crosses state lines, its got to be consistent we can’t have one state labeling law like Vermont disrupt that system. We need to not have a system of rules that stigmatizes GMOs. Again the safety is there. GMOs are safe. It has been proven time and time again, it’s safe for the consumer. We need to not have any kind of mandatory labeling of GMOS that would potentially stigmatize those products for the consumer and also create an extra layer of regulatory requirements and bureaucracy that would raise the price of groceries for consumers — many of whom struggle with their grocery bills in the first place.”
