Excellence In Ag

Excellence In Ag

Excellence In Ag. I'm Greg Martin with Washington Ag Today.

Kellee Balcom is the Executive Director for the Washington State Potato Foundation and each year they give out a number of scholarships so if you are interested in agriculture and going to college, listen up.

BALCOM: The Potato Foundation is launching its, I think 16th year now of Excellence in Agriculture Scholarships and applications are posted on our website right now. Every year the Potato Foundation gives away somewhere between $30 and $60-thousand dollars in scholarships. Students are welcome to apply if they go to our website which is potatofoundation.org and there's approximately 20 different scholarships are available, in addition to the Excellence In Ag scholarship so know that anyone who applies doesn't necessarily need to be aspiring to be a farmer but rather just want to be in the ag industry.

Any students beginning their freshman year in college should look into these scholarships.

BALCOM: And we even have some programs that provide some funds for some of the graduate students. So students can apply as early as their freshman year in college as well as even if they didn't apply a prior year, you're somewhere in the middle of your pursuit of your education and you decide that you'd like to pursue this scholarship that door is still open for those folks as well.

Balcom says these scholarships are available for students in Washington and Oregon states. And she gives us a bit of background on the foundation.

BALCOM: The Washington Potato Foundation has been around for about 18 years and has provided a host of activities for the potato growing industry, everything from grower education right on through to what we're talking about today which is the Excellence In Agriculture program.

And that's Washington Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
