National Association Wheat Growers President Discusses Benefits of TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership a trade agreement with 12 Pacific Rim Countries will provide for immediate duty-free access for U.S. wheat in Vietnam and it will create country-specific quotas for additional U.S. wheat exports to Japan according to the National Association of Wheat Growers. Congressional approval of TPP could also open the door to adding in other countries to the TPP framework. At last week’s Tri-State Grain Growers Convention, National Association of Wheat Growers President and Washington state wheat grower Brett Blankenship shared more about the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal for wheat growers.
Blankenship: “In the Pacific Northwest, since we export to the Pacific Rim, the Trans-Pacific Parternship is key to our future. In the case of wheat nationally, the Trans-Pacific Partnership probably won’t explode exports anytime soon but what it will do is keep our competitors from getting marketshare from us — and that is even more important than growing sales. The good news is once we pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership other markets will come into that trading zone and other countries will be added. That is key area for middle class growth over the next several decades — exponential growth — And they will be hungry for food and hungry for wheat. So the Trans-Pacific Partnership will be good for American jobs, good for American industry, great for the PNW and exceptionally good for wheat.”
