Pear Retailer of the Year

Pear Retailer of the Year

Pear Retailer of the Year. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

What drives us as customers to make a pear purchase? There are many answers but one is the presentation by the retailer. How a grocery store displays and presents a product can have a definite influence on our buying decisions. Kathy Stephenson, Marketing Communications Director for Pear Bureau Northwest talks about their recent presentation of the Pear Retailer of the Year to Wegmans Food Markets.

STEPHENSON: The opportunity is to really identify someone in our industry who's doing a great job in the produce department featuring pears, doing all the best practices that we recommend, doing all the things that it takes to achieve success in the pear category and when we highlight them we like to talk about those wonderful things they do so that perhaps retailers that we're working with would aspire next year to be the 2016 Pear Retailer of the Year.

So what sort of things did Wegman's do that netted them this award.

STEPHENSON: They did about eight things. The top five things we recognize is that they are carrying bags of pears which help busy shoppers just grab a bag and go. It also allows us to add a second size of pears. It gives us that small sized pear as well as a large sized pear which helps our growers move different portions of their crop. They do secondary displays. Not only are they showing the ten varieties but they're also putting displays up next to the cheese or next to the salad department in order to provide other merchandizing opportunities for pears.
