Cattle on Feed Report

Cattle on Feed Report

Last week USDA released the monthly Cattle on Feed Report. Here’s USDA Livestock Analyst Shayle Shagam with the report’s national highlights.
Shagam: “On September first, the number of cattle in U.S. feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater was just under 10 million head, which was about 3 percent above a year ago. During August producers placed 1.6 million head, which was 5 percent below a year earlier and they marketed just under 1.6 million head during August which was about 6 percent below a year ago.”
Nationally both placements of cattle into feedlots and marketing of fed cattle during the month of August were the lowest since the series began in 1996.
In Colorado, the number of cattle and calves on feed in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 780,000 head as of the first of September. The latest inventory was 1 percent below last month but even with last year’s inventory at this time.
In Idaho there was an increase in the number of cattle and calves on feed in Idaho feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was 215,000 head going into feedlots, which was 26 percent higher than a year ago, but 2 percent lower than last month.
In Washington the number of cattle and calves on feed in Washington feedlots were a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was 195,000 head. That was up 8 percent from a year ago and down 7 percent from the previous month.
