Cattle on Feed Report

Cattle on Feed Report

Last week the USDA monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released — no real big surprises but as USDA Analyst Shayle Shagam shares
Shagam: “The number of cattle on feed on August first, was just over 10 million head of cattle which was about 3 percent above a year ago. During July producers placed just over 1.5 million head of cattle which was about 1 percent lower than a year earlier. During July that was the lowest number, since the series began in 1996. And during July feedlots marketed about 1.7 million head of cattle which was about 3 percent below than a year earlier and the marketing number was also the lowest number on record since 1996.”
The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 790,000 head as of August 1, 2015. The latest inventory was 5 percent below last month but even with a year ago.
In Idaho the number of cattle on feed for slaughter in Idaho feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 220,000 head as of August first. That is down 2 percent from last month but up about 26 percent than a year ago.
In Washington, the number of cattle on feed for slaughter in Washington feedlots was at 210,000 head which was 2 percent below last month, but 24 percent higher than a year ago.
