Demonstrating Against GMO's & Concerned About Wages

Demonstrating Against GMO's & Concerned About Wages. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Genetically modified salmon are the target of a coalition of progressive groups, concerned Costco customers, and fishermen who will demonstrate this Saturday at the Seattle Costco to challenge the grocery chain to publicly commit to not selling GMO salmon. More than 9,000 grocery stores across the country including Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeway and Kroger have already made commitments to not sell this genetically modified fish. The FDA has received nearly 2-million letters from business owners, consumers, scientists, fishermen and others in opposition to the sales of the salmon.

Freshman U.S. Congressman, Dan Newhouse says the passage of the $12 minimum wage bill by the Washington State House is something that concerns him as an ag producer.

NEWHOUSE: That's already having an impact on our ability to compete with neighboring states and other states in the union. I'm very concerned about taking one element of the equation and increasing it to the point where the people that are trying to produce food, food products will find it non-economical to hire a lot of people. I think we're going to see a decrease in employment opportunities.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
