A lot of you folks know that I think a great deal of regular contributor Mike Jenkins who has an outfitting service for big-game hunters called Up Front Outfitters. Since we recently added a fair number of radio stations in Colorado to our Sportsman's Spotlight family, I thought I would talk with Mike about elk hunting in Colorado, elk hunting being one of his major and favorite species.

"There is an abundance of elk in Colorado. Now, Colorado is not known for the genetics and the quality that some of the other Rocky Mountain states have so it's not known for the genetics but there are some really good trophy units in the state. That said, there are 92 over-the-counter units available in Colorado. For an elk hunter that doesn't have a place to go and didn't draw a coveted tag, it is a hunter's paradise. That makes it very attractive for a first-time elk hunter who just would like to see some action or a kid that would like to get into it, don't you think? Absolutely. Now with that, there is a lot of pressure but there is just a ton of animals, especially on the second or third rifle hunt where the elk have come down out of the mountains and gotten into the lower elevations. Also, there are millions of acres of public land accessible in the state of Colorado."

Again that's why I think so highly of Mike. He has knowledge, ability, charisma and a guy I love going hunting with.
