Several weeks ago there was almost a panic over the avian flu being discovered here in Idaho. It turns out that authorities had discovered that this flu was being carried by wild birds, as in migrating geese and ducks. As a result of the discovery in the wild birds and the discovery of some Falcons who were infected, the Idaho State Department of Agriculture set up a quarantine. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has lifted the quarantine zone in Canyon County, covering an area of approximately six miles around a site near Parma, Idaho where avian influenza was confirmed in a backyard flock of chickens. All surveillance and testing requirements have been met and no new domestic birds have been diagnosed with avian influenza.

The quarantine restricted the movement of avian species within and out of the identified zone. Poultry producers may now move poultry and poultry products without restrictions.

ISDA encourages bird owners to continue to protect their domestic birds from contact with wild waterfowl and remain vigilant in their biosecurity measures.
