FSA Urges Farmers to Vote for County Representation

Farmers and ranchers who want local input on federal farm programs are reminded to vote in the annual the USDA Farm Service Agency county committee elections. The ballots were sent out in the mail last week. Washington Farm Service Agency Executive Director Judy Olson says
Olson: “This is a real important opportunity for farmers and ranchers around the country and certainly in our counties. Serving as a FSA County Committee member provides an important link between local producers and USDA. The farmers and ranchers who are elected to the County Committees help us deliver our FSA programs at the local level. This means they can use their knowledge and their judgments to make decisions on commodity support programs as it pertains to their county — conservation programs, insurance and crop disaster type programs and emergency programs and eligibility. The other big role that County Committees play is that is the only area in the federal government — our County Committees can actually hear appeals by producers at the local level.”
To be eligible to vote, producers must participate or cooperate in any Farm Service Agency program. Producers must return ballots to their local FSA offices by the Dec. 1, 2014, deadline to ensure that their vote is counted.
