WFB Retro/Safety Program

WFB Retro/Safety

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

Agriculture ranks as one of the most dangerous occupations due to the nature of the work and the equipment necessary to get the job done. Knowing this Washington Farm Bureau Safety Director Jeff Lutz says WFB provides members a number of expert safety services and programs to help them create a safer workplace and prevent worker injuries.

LUTZ: Farm Bureau has always been an advocate for our members - we’ve been property rights and water use, but we do so many other things and one of those is safety. We have a very robust safety program that we provide to our members through our Retrospective Rating Program. And we have a tremendous amount of experience and expertise that we offer to our members but I don’t think they always use.

Lutz says that included within that program is supervisor safety training.

LUTZ: We realized years ago that the main person that we talk to is usually the grower, or the owner/the operator and we realized that we were probably missing a component - and that was the supervisors. So now we do supervisor training. We talk to them about ethics and integrity, and personnel management. And we get into things like risk assessment of the farm - are there hazards that would cause injuries or illnesses.

Tomorrow Lutz will talk more about the training and services offered as part of WFB’s Retro/Safety program. For more information be sure to visit www.wsfb.com.

That’s Washington Ag Today.
