New Dairy Protection Program & One Kill Away

New Dairy Protection Program & One Kill Away plus Labor Day Cookouts. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Starting Sept. 2, 2014, farmers can enroll in the new dairy Margin Protection Program. The voluntary program, part of the Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating farmers when the margin – the difference between the price of milk and feed costs – falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack.

VILSACK: The catastrophic coverage has a premium of $100 and while prices are good this year and we expect and anticipate that they will continue to be good next year, well above the threshold for the triggering of the catastrophic coverage, for a hundred dollars folks may be wise to get engaged and involved in this program as a safety measure.

One livestock kill away. That's what stands between an Oregon wolf pack and a kill order. The kill order for the wolf pack has to meet three conditions including hard evidence the pack is responsible for four livestock attacks over the past six months, the rancher has to have taken non-lethal steps to protect his livestock, and the Fish & Wildlife department feels wolf attacks are likely to continue even with more non-lethal protections. This particular pack is responsible for three livestock killings in the last several months.

Now, what are the biggest food safety mistakes outdoor grillers make? Gary Crawford reports.
