National Ag and Conservation Leaders Take On-Ground Tour

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to participate on a Washington Association of Wheat Growers tour throughout Spokane County with several national and state leaders from USDA and National Resources Conservation Services. The tour consisted of several stops with Spokane County farmers explaining their conservation practices and provided the opportunity for the leaders from Washington D.C. to see how their programs and policies work on the ground here in the Pacific Northwest.

It was a beautiful day to be out standing in the fields and learn what farmers are doing to better improve their soil health and farming practices.

USDA Under Secretary Ann Mills shares some of her impressions

Mills: "What struck me are the very candid conversations that we had with two wheat producers. Where they talked about some of the benefits of conversation and why they got into it — in some cases stewardship was a part of it. Another big part of it was to allow a young farmer to keep the family tradition going and to stay in agriculture going — that was very powerful moment for me. The other thing that has come out of these candid conversations — breaking down into very specific bits of information what NRSC can do to make sure that the conservation practices here in Eastern Washington work for farmers in Eastern Washington and understanding the specifics of why we need to be flexible — that was really helpful."
