Lisa Chen from Kennewick recently became the happy recipient of 10,001individually sized bags of potato chips. Chen had her name drawn as the winner of the Washington State Potato Commission's promotion to help celebrate National Potato Chip Day. More than 1,200 people entered the drawing by "liking" the WSPC's Facebook page. Chen says she plans to share the potato chips with her local food bank, her children's youth groups, and her brother and sister-in-law who are teachers and will be able to use them in their schools.

The National Potato Council and the U.S. Potato Board have announced that the Mexican government has published final regulations establishing a framework for allowing imports of fresh U.S. potatoes into all of Mexico. Currently, U.S. fresh potatoes are limited to a 16 mile zone along the U.S. - Mexican border. Washington State Potato Commission Executive Director Chris Voigt says that while this is exciting news for northwest potato growers, the rules aren't official yet and won't be for at least 60 days. Reportedly, shipments of fresh potatoes between the two countries could begin before June.

Space is quickly filling up for the upcoming Washington Farm Labor Association supervisor training workshops. In fact, the April 1st Wenatchee session is sold out. Spaces are left though for the April 2nd Pasco, April 3rd Yakima and April 4th Salem, Oregon workshops. WAFLA's Dan Fazio says the training will offer a full day of leadership, motivational and basic human resources law concepts for field supervisors.

FAZIO: A good crew leader can make or break an operation and most growers will also admit to you that there's a lot of leadership training that needs to be done for these important employees.
