The Rescinding of DOI's National Blueways Program

Not very often are there regulations being revoked, today's story focuses on a little known

Department of Interior's Secretarial Order 3312 or National Blueways Initiative created in 2012 -- which allowed the federal government to designate watersheds from hilltop to hilltop and then regulate those waterways the land and water throughout those areas. Public Lands Council Executive Director, Dustin Van Liew explains the concern

Van Liew: "So the federal government then reaching into state areas and into those places that local and state government should have purview over regulations."

Van Liew shares the good news that the current Interior Secretary Sally Jewel has rescinded the the blueways initiative last month.

Van Liew: "We're very happy to hear that she chose to rescind this order because again it would have allowed the federal government to reach in those into states and regulate the land and water. Where we saw it last year really come into focus was there was a proposal to designate 17.8 million acres in Arkansas and Missouri on a watershed. Our members really engaged, and through NCBA and PLC worked with members in Congress to weigh in with our concerns over this order and the impact that it could have to have federal bureaucrats across those watersheds in such vast areas."
