Ag Blogging Advice

Ag Blogging Advice

Perhaps you are interested in becoming more involved in the social media conversation about agriculture but not sure where to start.

Idaho ag blogger Alise Erickson with her mother Robin Wylie Lundquist posts stories to their blog -- Kiss My Tractor. I asked her what advice she would give someone just beginning in the blogsphere.

Erickson: "So one of the things we've learned -- and we are still learning about it -- it is all about networking. So you start by writing your blog and you can write it in any format -- you can say it in first person or there are some blogs that are mostly photos, farm photos. They take a photo of their farm every day and post it with a thought and what not. Definitely networking -- find other people who are writing their farming story. Follow their blog, and you leave comments and you interact with them and they reciprocate. It is a good way to build contacts in the ag blogging community -- there is a community I'm learning. So that has been nice and a good way to build our readership."

Every one has a story to tell and Erickson encourages other farmers and ranchers to tell their story. She says it is important as there are all sorts of preconceived ideas about agriculture.

Erickson: "Most farms are family farms; run by husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and brothers. It is a family industry not a corporate industry. I think people need to realize that. Mom just said that it is about 98 percent of farms are family farms and that is really important to get out there."
