Steer-A-Year Update

Steer-A-Year Update

Welcome to Open Range, I’m KayDee Gilkey. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks KayDee. OSU’s Steer-A-Year program continues to be popular and a great way for students to learn, first-hand, about raising cattle. Jim Males is the instructor.

MALES: A year ago we had a good year, cattle did well. We got all the cattle sold which was good. This year we’ve got 24 steers on feed and again things are going very well. For the last three years we’ve had large groups of students involved.

He says there are about 30 students in the program this year.

MALES: Students really seem to like the hands-on experience they get from the steer-a-year program. There’s nothing like application and a lot of us really learn much better if we get to actually get some hands on experience.

With the success of the program you’d think there would be thoughts of expanding.

MALES: We’d like to be able to continue the program probably at about its current size. I think give our ability to merchandize cattle and really the space we have to be able to feed cattle here on campus we can’t handle getting a lot bigger. We’ve actually included corn silage in our diet and so that’s given the students some added experience in really feeding a ration that’s got some moisture in it.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m KayDee Gilkey.
