Getting Your Bison On. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Line On Agriculture.

I’ve mentioned that I am quite fond of bison meat. It’s lean and very tasty but it can be hard to come by. Dave Carter with the National Bison Association says that is why they created their new app.

CARTER: We get so many calls from people saying “I love bison, where can I find it?” And so we worked with some folks to develop a new bison finder app that you can download. It’s a free app and you just punch it in. It finds where you are at and it will bring up a list of retailers or restaurants nearby that have bison and you can even get directions.

Carter says the app is a work in progress.

CARTER: We’re just getting our folks to populate it right now. We’ve got all the Ted’s Montana on there. We’re getting all the Whole Foods because it’s in all the Whole Foods. But we’re really trying to get our folks saying look if you are supplying to local restaurant in your area, you need to get them on there so we don’t have anybody saying, “Whoops, that what I thought. There’s no bison where I’m at.”

The app also has a fun facts button.

CARTER: We love to tell people the story behind the animal. That’s one of the reasons that people eat and enjoy bison is it tastes great but they love the fact this is such an incredible animal and such an important part of our environment and so they can pull up a few fun facts and learn a little bit more about this animal that’s been roaming the North American continent for tens of thousands of years.
