Milk Gets Slammed & Social Security Boost

Milk Gets Slammed & Social Security Boost plus Food Forethought. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Drink your milk, it’s good for you. Ever heard that? According to the results of a study published Monday that might not be the case. One Harvard professor is challenging current recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Academy of Pediatrics that people of all ages drink three servings of reduced-fat milk per day. David Ludwig, PhD, professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, says the low-fat dairy drink is loaded with sugar and calories. What’s more, he says, people who eat well may not even need the recommended three serving of milk since he says there are plenty of solid foods that provide adequate amounts of calcium. I want to know what I’m supposed to dunk my cookies in then...

The Social Security Administration says that the immigration bill passed by the Senate would help its coffers, adding $276 billion in revenue over the next 10 years while costing only $33 billion. The Social Security Administration’s chief actuary, Stephen C. Goss, says he believes that even 75 years out, there will be a net gain from immigrants. Republicans have tried to clamp down on the amount that illegal immigrants who paid into the system will be able to withdraw. The Social Security Administration estimates that in 2010 illegal immigrants paid a net contribution of $12 billion, either by working under a fraudulent Social Security number or by using a legitimate Social Security number after overstaying a visa or otherwise losing permission to work.

Now with today’s Food Forethought, here’s Lacy Gray.

Over the last several years our family has been putting forth the effort to buy as many made in the USA products as we possibly can, and we have found out that it can be extremely difficult! This 4th of July found us needing a new flag to display over the holiday and guess what - it took quite a bit of searching on our part to find an American flag that wasn’t made in China! There are those that would say that to “buy American” is misplaced patriotism. That is pure and utter nonsense. What is wrong with being proud of your country and wanting to support it? Those of us who are making the effort to support our nation’s economy and workers by buying as many American made products as we can are not trying to undermine international trade or display hostility towards our foreign neighbors. Far from it. We simply believe that the quality and craftsmanship of American made products is unsurpassed. We also know that a strong global economy is dependent upon a strong American economy. So when you’re shopping try to remember and buy American made and grown; you’ll be showing real patriotic spirit and pride.

Thanks Lacy. That’s today’s Northwest Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
