7-2 SS Caribou Hunt

7-2 SS Caribou Hunt

A caribou hunt way up in the northern reaches of Alaska. But first things first.

I cannot tell you how many times when I am out doing the Outfitter Showcase show on the Outdoor Channel that guides have talked about their hunters getting into hunting shape. You go out into the wilderness and if you are overweight and haven’t been used to physical exercise, your whole experience can go from at the very least limited all the way to miserable because you are not fit. Regular contributor and executive chef for the Simplot Corporation, also extremely seasoned and knowledgeable hunter, Randy King is keenly aware of this situation. I chatted with him about an upcoming hunt.  “We are doing a backpacking, caribou hunt in the Brooks Range which is  the tundra area on the other side of the mountains up in Alaska. The tickets are booked, caribou tags are purchased, the truck is been rented and right now what we have been doing is spending our time getting ready fitness wise. Being a chef, high cholesterol and a little bit overweight, I have hit it hard lately and what I have decided to do is invest my time in running a relay race so I am going to run the Sawtooth Relay. I have lost about 25 pounds and have figured out how to work my body in order to hike across the tundra. I’m excited. So you will let us know how you made out on the trip right? Definitely.
